rPET for strapping applications

POLYMETRIX SSP technology processes washed PET flakes (bottle chips) into recycled PET pellets (rPET) with high viscosity.

Post-consumer PET bottles are usually sorted into different color streams after collection. The bottles are shredded in PET washers, subjected to intense surface cleaning, and sorted. The resulting PET flakes are the input material for the next process step in POLYMETRIX bottle-to-strapping rPET process.

This rPET process includes an extrusion step with melt degassing and melt filtration, followed by pelletizing and an SSP process under nitrogen. The SSP process causes an increase in viscosity of up to 0.4 dl/g. Alternatively, the rPET flakes can be refined directly in the SSP plant.

The SSP leaN concept is preferred because of the typically lower capacities of rPET plants. Extrusion and SSP are either associated with melt-to-pellet crystallization or remain independent operations. The high flexibility of POLYMETRIX SSP process can address markets that alternate high viscosity rPET pellets with production for bottle-to-bottle rPET applications.
