rPET for strapping applications

POLYMETRIX stand-alone rPET technology is employed to convert washed PET flakes to high viscosity recycled PET (rPET) pellets.

Post-consumer PET bottles are typically sorted into differently colored bottle streams after collection. The bottles undergo grinding, intense surface cleaning and further sorting in PET wash plants. The resulting PET flakes are the input material for the POLYMETRIX bottle-to-strapping rPET process.

The process consists of an initial extrusion step with melt degassing and melt filtration and is followed by pelletizing and an SSP upgrading step under nitrogen. The SSP reaches a viscosity lift of up to 0.4dl/g. Alternatively direct upgrading of rPET flakes in the SSP is possible.

The SSP leaN concept is favored, due to the typically lower capacities of rPET plants. Extrusion and SSP are either linked by melt-to-pellet crystallization or remain independent operations. The high flexibility of the POLYMETRIX SSP process allows targeting markets that use high viscosity rPET pellets interchangeably with production for bottle-to-bottle rPET applications.
